Your Time at College: What to Expect From Your College Experience

Every year millions of high school seniors around the country look forward to graduation. Many are looking beyond the summer break towards their new life at college.
For most this will be the first time away from home and their first taste of true independence.
While some may have siblings or friends who have attend or have already attended college and can give them a taste of what to expect, the majority enter life in college completely unaware of what the experience will entail.
Each student’s college experience is unique, and most find that they get out of it what they put into it.
Since the primary goal of attending a university is the quest for knowledge and ultimately a degree, a student’s focus should first be on academic life at college. Many students have a difficult time adjusting to the freedom they have regarding their classes and studies. Life at college means students are free for the first time to select what classes they will take, how many they will take, and when they will take them.
Many are overwhelmed by the large workload initially, not anticipating the number of papers, projects, and lab work that are now required in almost all college classes. Many colleges limit the number of hours freshman can take for this reason.
Almost all students going off to college in the fall as freshmen look most forward to the social aspect of life at college. Many choose to rush fraternities or sororities as a way to squeeze the most out of their social life while at school.
If attending a major university sporting events are one of the most common ways to get out with fellow students and build new friendships. Football, basketball, and other sports hold games and pep rallies on campus and are a way of life at many schools and can comprise a large part of the college social experience.
One of the most rewarding aspects of life at college is the opportunity to develop lifelong friendships and contacts. Universities are huge and diverse places, with people from all across the country and all across the world travelling to attend.
A student can broaden their horizons while on campus by joining one of the many clubs or societies available to the young mind. There are also usually a large number of volunteer organizations within the school that any well-rounded college student should consider joining.
